PLAYER

Smith hit .600 (6-for-10) with six runs scored, four doubles and seven RBI in three weekend games against Iowa. The freshman had a .643 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage for the Govs. He was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a double, walk and two RBI in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader and finished that day by going 3-for-5 with three runs scored, two doubles and three more RBI in the nightcap. He capped the weekend by going 1-for-2 with a run scored, double, walk and two RBI in Sunday’s 7-4 victory. The freshman had the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the seventh inning of that contest.

PITCHER
Jake Johansmeier, RHP • So., 6-3, 170 • St. Charles, Ill. • Eastern Illinois
Johansmeier started the 2014 season by pitching six innings in defeating No. 14 Louisiana-Lafayette 5-1 on Friday night. The sophomore scattered three hits and allowed one run while striking out four batters to pick up the victory. The nationally-ranked Ragin’ Cajuns were picked to win the Sun Belt Conference after leading the nation in home runs and ranking sixth in batting average in 2013. Johansmeier retired the first five batters of the game and nine of the first 10 batters he faced; he did not allow a hit until the fifth inning and ULL’s lone run of the game came with two outs in the seventh inning.
