Jacksonville State Team, Gamecocks' Lopez Caballo Lead After Day One of 2012 OVC Women's Golf Championship

DICKSON, Tenn.
- Jacksonville State has a three stroke lead after round one of the 2012 Ohio Valley Conference Women's Golf Championship being played at the GreyStone Golf Club in Dickson.

The Gamecocks, a four-time OVC champion, achieved that lead on a chilly and windy day at the course. For the week the course is playing 5,964 yards and is a par 72.

Jax State combined to shoot a round of 296 (+8) on Sunday and is three shots up on defending champion Morehead State (299). Murray State is 11 shots off the lead in third place (307). The teams are rounded out by Eastern Kentucky (310), Austin Peay (316), Tennessee Tech (330) and Eastern Illinois (330). Tennessee State is playing just three golfers this week and will not calculate in the team standings.

Individually Jacksonville State sophomore Lourdes Lopez Caballo has a one-shot lead after firing a 1-under round of 71 on Sunday. She fought the tough conditions by birding holes No. 11, 13 and 14 on the backside and was the only golfer under par on the day.

Lopez Caballo has the lead over a pair of golfers including junior teammate Ornella Arrizon and Morehead State junior Marisa Kamelgarn. Both of those golfers carded even par rounds of 72 to open the Championship. Two others Morehead State golfers, Vanessa Bognot and Emma Jonsson, had 2-over rounds of 74 and are tied for fourth.

In addition to Lopez Caballo and Arrizon, JSU senior Lucia Fernandez Valdes had a round of 75 on Sunday and is in a tie for sixth place. The Gamecocks other two golfers, Luz Armijo-Fernandez and Astrid Parsson, are tied for 12th after identical rounds of 78 (+6).

The Morehead State trio of Kamelgarn, Bognot and Jonsson paced the Eagles squad with Amalie Munck and Sofia Pettersson rounding out the team's score with rounds of 79 (+7).

Murray State senior Morgan Cross and junior Alexandra Lennartsson each fired rounds of 75 (+3) on Sunday and are tied for sixth after day one. Racers sophomore Delaney Howson is tied for 12th after a round of 78 (+6).

Eastern Kentucky's attack was paced by junior April Emerson who was three-over (75) on the day and is tied for sixth place. Teammate Linda Hogberg and Kara Fant are tied for 12th after scores of 78 (+6). Fant recorded the only eagle on the day, doing so on the par five ninth hole.

Austin Peay's Tabitha Beard had a round of 76 (+4) and is in 10th place after day one.

Tennessee Tech's Brandy VanEtten led the Golden Eagle attack with a round of 77 (+5) and sits in 11th place.

Eastern Illinois was paced by Kathryn Koester who had a round of 80 (+8) and is in 24th place.

Of Tennessee State's three individuals, Mya Billingsley led the way with a round of 89 (+17).
