HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Morehead State split a pair of matches on Tuesday night. The Eagles defeated North Carolina A&T (25-5, 25-18, 25-18) before falling to Marshall (25-16, 28-26, 23-25, 17-25, 10-15).
Ellie Roberson finished with a team high nine kills while hitting .438 in the win over North Carolina A&T. Annie Gruenschlaeger hit .571 and had four blocks. Keough led the team with five blocks as the Eagles totaled nine team blocks. Bohannon and Caitlin Clark led with seven digs each. The Eagles hit .333 for the match.
Tattiana Cooper led the Aggies with seven kills. NC A&T finished with 19 kills and 23 errors along with seven service aces.
Against Marshall, Roberson registered a season high 16 kills, while Holly Evans tied a season best with 15 kills on a .375 hitting night. Kaitlin Craven had 13 kills. Gruenschlaeger set her season high with nine total blocks as the Eagles totaled 14 team rejections. Liz Schuler led MSU with 22 digs, while Leslie Schellhaas and Aryn Bohannon tallied season high dig numbers with 12. Kirstie Brangers handed out 47 assists and had 10 of the Eagles' 74 digs.
Marshall got a match high 21 kills from Elizabeth Herman and 15 from Laura Der.
ILLINOIS STATE 3, SIU EDWARDSVILLE 0
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Despite double-digit kills from freshman Kelsey Augustine and senior Sydney Winslow, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville volleyball dropped a 25-20, 25-17, 25-19 match to Illinois State Tuesday at the Vadalabene Center.
The Cougars recorded more kills than the visiting Redbirds by a 38-37 margin. The difference came in SIUE's errors, where the Cougars finished with 22 to Illinois State's 11.
SIUE, now 3-4 overall, had its two-match win streak snapped as it hit .134 as a team. Illinois State, meanwhile, finished with a .252 hitting percentage. Mallory Leggett led the Redbird attack with 10 kills.
Illinois State, 6-2, garnered six blocks, including four from Kristin Stauter. Jenny Menedez led the ISU defense with a match-high 21 digs.
EVANSVILLE 3, UT MARTIN 0
MARTIN, Tenn. - Not even the friendly confines of Skyhawk Fieldhouse and the first home crowd of the season could help The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team as the road-weary Purple Aces of Evansville cruised to a 3-0 (14-25, 17-25, 12-25) victory.
UT Martin head coach Darrin McClure said he found a positive in the match despite the setback. McClure moved junior Britany Wilburn from middle blocker to outside hitter.
The Skyhawks struggled in all three sets. They would either battle early and then falter or start slow and fight back.
The Skyhawks fall to 2-5 on the season, while Evansville which is en route home from winning the Trojan Spiketacular at Troy University in Alabama improves to 6-1.
UE claimed the third set 25-12. The Skyhawks trailed 8-7 when Evansville went on a 10-0 run. Wilburn hit .400 in the third set to lead the Skyhawks. Evansville was led by Emily Wandersee who hit .500 and had five kills in the third set.
Evansville out scored the Skyhawks 8-1 to claim the second set 25-17. Wandersee led the Purple Aces charge with seven kills and a .700 hitting percentage. As a team UE hit .419. The SKyhawks showed signs of progress with their .250 hitting percentage.
Evansville cruised to a 10-1 advantage in the first set, but the Skyhawks fought back, out scoring Evansville 7-3 to cut the deficit to a respectable five points. Evansville's April Lubrecht triggered a a 5-0 run with back-to-back aces and Evansville claimed a 25-14 win.
The Skyhawks made nine attack errors in the first set an only recorded eight kills. Evansville hit .132 in the set.
LIPSCOMB 3, TENNESSEE STATE 0
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee State University volleyball team has played hard and shown improvement in each match this season but the Tigers have yet to get in the win column. TSU dropped three sets to Lipscomb Tuesday night in Allen Arena.
The set scores were 25-10, 25-19 and 25-21.
Tennessee State (0-5) totaled 20 kills and hit -.046 in the contest while Lipscomb (5-2) turned in 35 kills and a .312 hitting percentage.
Shaquita Williams led the Tigers with six kills while Kamille King added a team best eight digs. Erika Moss tallied 17 assists.
Alex Kelly, the only player to post double-digits in kills, led Lipscomb with 10. Kelly also had 10 digs along with Caitlin Dotson.
Five straight errors led to TSU falling behind 5-1 in the opening set. The Lady Bisons stretched their lead to 7-2 before the Tigers used a timeout to regroup. LU, however, answered with a 4-0 run to increase the advantage to 11-2.
A kill and service ace from Vicmari Prospero sparked a small run for the Tigers, cutting the deficit down to 13-8 but Lipscomb scored the next seven points and maintained control the rest of the set.
The teams traded points in the tightly played second set. Neither team was able to build more than a two-point lead until Lipscomb capitalized on a couple of TSU miscues and took a 15-12 lead. Although, the Tigers rallied towards the end, the Lady Bisons never trailed again in the set again.
The Tigers seemed rejuvenated in the third set, jumping out to a 4-0 lead before back-to-back service aces from Shaquita Williams gave TSU a 7-1 cushion. TSU was leading 8-1 when LU used an 8-2 run to come within one, 10-9.
TSU scored the next four points to make the score, 14-9, but five unanswered points from LU tied the set, 14-14, and forced a Tiger timeout.
The rest of the set was a battle as both teams went point-for-point. With the score knotted, 21-21, the momentum shifted towards Lipscomb. The Lady Bisons posted four straight points to close out the set and secure the win.
