2010 OVC Players of the Week - September 6
Offensive:
Ilyanna Hernandez, OH, Jr, 5'10
Torrance, Calif. - Austin Peay
Hernandez was named to the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational All-Tournament team after leading the Lady Govs with 46 kills in the three-match outing. She recorded 16 kills against both Wright State and DePaul before posting 14 kills against IUPUI. Hernandez also recorded seven service aces to pace the squad. She also chipped in defensively with 32 digs.
Defensive:
Lauren Harkins, DS/L, Jr., 5'7
Louisville, Ky. - Jacksonville State
Harkins led a Gamecock defense that held its opponents to a .116 attack percentage on the week. She earned all-tournament team honors at the Virginia Tech Hokie Invitational after averaging 6.9 digs per set. In the win over Coastal Carolina, she totaled 34 digs in four sets. She had 23 digs in a three-set win over Long Island to open up the tournament.

DaTong, Shanxi, China - Murray State
Guo helped lead the Racers to the three best hitting percentages on the season. Murray State finished the Bearcat Invitational with a .284 mark versus Cincinnati. She recorded her first triple-double of the season against Kent State with 11 kills, 14 digs and 51 assists. She tallied the third-best hitting percentage on the team with a .318 mark to go with 17 kills and 24 digs.
2010 Ohio Valley Conference Volleyball Team Notes
Austin Peay (0-0 OVC; 6-1 overall): Austin Peay ran its winning streak to five matches with three victories at the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational. The Lady Govs won four-set affairs with Wright State (25-20, 21-25, 25-17, 30-28) and DePaul (25-23, 25-16, 20-25, 25-18) before sweeping IUPUI (25-16, 25-22, 25-9). Junior Ilyanna Hernandez was named to the all-tournament team after leading the team with 46 kills in the three matches. She also chipped in 32 digs. Junior Paige Economos also earned all-tourney honors as she paced the squad with 46 digs, including 17 in the three sets against IUPUI. Senior Jessica Mollman had 24 kills and 15 blocks over the three matches. She surpassed the 200 career block plateau and now has 212 career blocks. Sophomore Nikki Doyle followed up her all-tournament performance at Mississippi State with 37 kills at the IUPUI tournament. Austin Peay will travel to East Tennessee State to participate in the Buccaneer Classic this weekend.
Eastern Illinois (0-0 OVC; 3-1 overall): Eastern Illinois opened up the 2010 season by going 3-1 at the Harvard Tournament. The Panthers defeated Bryant (25-23, 23-25, 26-24, 25-20), Harvard (25-17, 21-25, 25-13, 25-19) and New Hampshire (25-20, 25-17, 25-14) before falling to Boston College (26-28, 18-25, 22-25). Senior Erin Hake was named to the all-tournament team as she posted 36 kills during the four matches, including a career-high 16 against Bryant. She also led all Panthers with seven aces. Senior Jorie Dieter recorded 17 blocks on the weekend. She notched six versus both Bryant and Harvard. Junior Chrissie Albers joined Hake on the all-tourney team. She dished out 148 assists to go with 12 kills and eight total blocks. Eastern Illinois will travel to the Michigan State Spartan Invitational this weekend.
Eastern Kentucky ( 0-0 OVC; 1-5 overall): Eastern Kentucky fell to Appalachain State (22-25, 21-25, 15-25), Valparaiso (25-18, 26-24, 27-29, 24-26, 11-15) and USC Upstate (25-23, 14-25, 18-25, 21-25) last week. Freshman Ashely Edmond posted her first career double-double with 18 kills and 18 digs versus Valparaiso. She followed that up with a career-best 20 kills against USC Upstate. Senior Lauren Snyder averaged 4.17 kills through six sets before suffering an injury. Senior Kate Hendle averaged 9.71 assists in three matches and senior Abby O'Connor recorded 7.00 digs per set. Eastern Kentucky will travel to UNLV this weekend to participate in the UNLV Invitational.
Jacksonville State (0-0 OVC; 4-3 overall): Jacksonville State defeated Kennesaw State (25-14, 29-27, 25-10) in its home opener before going 2-1 at the Virginia Tech Hokie Invitational. The Gamecocks posted wins over Long Island (25-13, 25-17, 30-28) and Coastal Carolina (25-18, 25-22, 23-25, 25-17) before falling to Virginia Tech (25-27, 13-25, 24-26). Senior Caitlin Vorbeck earned all-tournament honors after averaging 3.5 kills and 2.5 digs over the three matches. She finished the week with 49 kills. Junior Lauren Harkins also garnered all-tournament accolades as she posted 6.9 digs per set. Senior Brooke Schumacher dished 135 assists for the week, including 95 during the tourney. Jacksonville State travels to Denver this weekend to play in the Denver Pioneer Classic.
Morehead State (0-0 OVC; 3-3 overall): Morehead State went 1-2 in the Northwestern Challenge last weekend. The Eagles defeated Utah (23-25, 25-21, 25-22) and fell to Northwestern (16-25, 18-25, 19-25) and Mississippi (26-28, 23-25, 24-26). Senior Kristie Brangers was named to the all-tournament team, averaging 10.4 assists and hitting .368. Sophomore Ellie Roberson led the team with 32 kills while junior Liz Schuler averaged 5.82 digs, including 27 in the win over Utah. Morehead State plays North Carolina A&T and Marshall on Tuesday and travels to the North Carolina State Tournament this weekend.
Murray State (0-0 OVC; 2-5 overall): Murray State picked up its first wins of the season as the Racers went 2-1 at the Bearcat Invitational. Murray State defeated James Madison (25-23, 25-19, 25-18) and Kent State (25-22, 14-25, 26-24, 20-25, 15-11) before falling to Cincinnati (17-25, 15-25, 29-25). Senior Ashley Nenninger and Becca Lamb both earned all-tournament honors. Lamb tallied a .365 (30k-3e-75ta) hitting percentage and added four assists, two service aces and four blocks. Nenninger contributed 37 kills and seven blocks. Junior Kayleah Sauer led the team with 45 digs in the three matches. Junior Jade Guo recorded her first triple-double of the season against Kent State as she tallied 10 kills, 14 digs and 51 assists. Murray State will travel to Evansville for the UE Dunn Hospitality Tournament this weekend.
Southeast Missouri (0-0 OVC; 2-4 overall): Southeast Missouri dropped all three matches in the JQH Invitational, falling to North Carolina (15-25, 25-23, 15-25, 13-25), Ohio (15-25, 22-25, 20-25) and Missouri State (16-25, 14-25, 14-25). Senior Kelly Benacka recorded 54 digs over the week, including 27 in the match against UNC. She now has 125 digs on the season. Freshman Julie Shives posted her third double-double of the season in the match with Missouri State as she recorded 33 assists and 16 digs. She finished the tourney with 82 assists. Southeast Missouri will travel to Southern Illinois to participate on the Saluki Invitational this weekend.
SIU Edwardsville (3-3 overall): SIU Edwardsville went 2-1 at the Drury Inn ISU Classic last weekend. The Cougars fell to Indiana State (15-25, 19-25, 26-24, 25-18, 14-16) before defeating Montana State (25-20, 25-21, 17-25, 25-19) and Western Carolina (25-6, 25-23, 25-21). Senior Sydney Winslow was named the tourney MVP after recording 40 kills over the three matches, including 14 versus Indiana State. SIUE will host Illinois State on Tuesday in its only match of the week.
Tennessee State (0-0 OVC; 0-4 overall): Tennessee State dropped four matches to kick off the 2010 season. The Tigers fell to Western Kentucky (10-25, 23-25, 17-25), Ball State (5-25, 13-25, 19-25), Oakland (13-25, 13-25, 24-26) and Robert Morris (22-25, 29-31, 25-23, 19-25). Senior Santia Sanders recorded 32 kills over the four matches including posted a double-double of 11 kills and 11 digs versus Robert Morris. She turned in a 13-dig performance versus Oakland. Sophomore Calasia Williams recorded 44 digs last week, including 17 against Robert Morris. Tennessee State will travel to Lipsomb on Tuesay and play in the Memphis Invitational this weekend.
Tennessee Tech (0-0 OVC; 2-6 overall): Tennessee Tech went 2-3 last week, picking up wins over Belmont (16-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-17) and Northwestern State (25-22, 25-21, 25-14). The Golden Eagles fell to Syracuse (25-20, 12-25, 21-25, 15-25), North Texas (23-25, 23-25, 14-25) and Samford (10-25, 18-25, 20-25). Freshman Natalie Penrod led the team with 47 digs over the five matches with a .205 hitting percentage. She posted 12 kills against both Northwestern State and North Texas. Freshman Allison May paced the defense with 64 digs including 21 against Belmont. Tennessee Tech will travel to the Western Kentucky Invitational this weekend.
UT Martin (0-0 OVC; 2-4 overall): UT Martin recorded its first wins of the season as it went 2-1 at the Mercer Bear Brawl Tournament. The Skyawks picked up victories over Citadel (25-17, 25-15, 25-13) and Presbyterian (25-19, 25-12, 14-25, 29-27) while falling to Mercer (18-25, 26-28, 25-16, 19-25). Junior Britany Wilburn registered 24 kills while hitting .313 over the three matches. Sophomore Kasey Elswick was named to the all-tournament team after she recorded 5.73 digs per set. Junior Jenna Miller joined Elswick on the all-tourney team as she dished out 106 assists. Senior Lauren Montague and junior Ashley Doherty returned to the Skyahwks last week after missing the Auburn tourney with injuries. Montague led the team with 41 points in 11 sets. UT Martin will host Evansville on Tuesday and play in the Texas State Century Tel Premier this weekend.
