2010 OVC Players of the Week - August 30

Offensive:
Holly Evans, RSH, Sr., 6'0
Blacklick, Ohio - Morehead State

Evans was named to the Georgia State Invitational All-Tournament team after leading the Eagles in kills and hitting percentage. She registered 35 kills in the three matches and only committed eight attack errors for a .342 hitting percentage. She also contributed 14 blocks (1.17 per set). She opened the year with a team-best 14 kills and just three errors (.333) to go along with five blocks against Georgia State. She had 10 kills and three errors while blocking six versus Wright State.  Evans finished the weekend with 11 kills and only two errors (.409) in the sweep of UNF while also notching three blocks.

Defensive:
Liz Schuler, L, Jr., 5'10
Louisville, Ky. - Morehead State

Schuler posted 77 digs in her first three matches at the libero position to give her 6.4 per set. She was named to the all-tournament team at the Georgia State Invitational for her efforts. In the match against Georgia State, she recorded 33 digs, including 12 in the second set. She followed that up with a team-high 27 in a four-set win over Wright State. Schuler finished the tourney with 17  digs in the sweep of UNF.

Grove City, Ohio - Southeast Missouri

Shives played every set in the Bradley Kickoff Classic and was named to the all-tourney team. She had 114 assists to go along with 35 digs and 22.5 points. She also recorded a team-best seven aces over the three matches.

2010 Ohio Valley Conference Volleyball Team Notes

Austin Peay (0-0 OVC; 3-1 overall): Austin Peay opened its 2010 campaign with a 3-1 record at the MSU Maroon Classic. The Lady Govs opened the tourney with a win over Montana (25-12, 25-20, 25-23) before falling to host Mississippi State (19-25, 22-25, 23-25). Austin Peay followed up with a pair of victories over UALR (21-25, 25-15, 25-20, 23-25, 15-8) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (25-22, 25-12,  25-17).  Sophomore Nikki Doyle was named to the all-tournament team after she recorded 60 kills, 11 assists and five blocks over the four matches. She posted a double-double of 11 kills and 11 digs against MSU. Junior Ilyanna Hernandez finished with 39 kills and senior Taylor Skinner added 36 kills while also posting a .446 attack percentage and a team-best nine blocks. Austin Peay recorded 37 service aces over the weekend, including 15 against UALR. The Lady Govs will travel to the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.

Eastern Illinois (0-0 OVC; 0-0 overall): Eastern Illinois will open its season this week as the Panthers travel to Boston to play in the Harvard Tournament. EIU will play Bryant and Harvard on Friday followed by New Hampshire and Boston College on Saturday.

Eastern Kentucky ( 0-0 OVC; 1-2 overall): Eastern Kentucky went 1-2 at the Western Carolina Invitational. The Colonels fell to North Carolina State (22-25, 14-25, 20-25) and Western Carolina (25-14, 25-20, 23-25, 14-25, 13-15) before defeating Coppin State (25-16, 25-13, 25-15). Senior Lauren Snyder led the Colonels in kills in all three matches, including a match-high 18 kills against Western Carolina. She also led all players with 12 kills in the Coppin State match. Senior Abby O'Connor recorded 5.73  digs per set last week, including posting 27 versus Western Carolina. Eastern Kentucky will travel to the Appalachian State Invitational this weekend.

Jacksonville State (0-0 OVC; 1-2 overall): Jacksonville State defeated Memphis (25-19, 24-26, 25-18, 25-16) before falling to Miami (Ohio) (18-25, 20-25, 22-25) and Belmont (18-25, 19-25, 22-25) at the Belmont Invitational. Senior Cailtin Vorbeck became the 15th member of JSU's 1,000-kill club after tallying 25 kills over the three matches. She now has 1,004 kills for her career. Senior Kara Slater was named to the all-tournament team after tallying 27 kills and 11 blocks. In the win over Memphis, Slater knocked down a team-best 16 kills on a .333 hitting percentage while blocking nine attempts. Jacksonville State will travel to the Virginia Tech Hokie Invitational this weekend.

Morehead State  (0-0 OVC; 2-1 overall): Morehead State opened the year with a 2-1 mark at the Georgia State Invitational, defeating Wright State (25-12, 25-16, 21-25, 25-18) and North Florida (25-19, 25-21, 25-17) and falling to GSU (23-25, 25-15, 25-19, 23-25, 14-16). Junior Liz Schuler made the move to libero from an attacking role her first two years and came up with 77 digs (6.42 per set) in her first three matches. She had 33 digs in the first match against Georgia State and 27 in the four-set victory over WSU. Senior Holly Evans led the team with 35 kills and hit a team-best .342. She only made eight attacking errors in the 12 sets MSU played and hit .409 against UNF. Sophomore Annie Gruenschlaeger recorded 17 blocks over the three matches. Junior Emma Keough hit .288 with 30 kills over the weekend. The Eagles will play at the Northwestern University Challenge this weekend.

Murray State (0-0 OVC;  0-4 overall): Murray State went 0-4 in Wyoming Invitational to open up the 2010 season. The Racers fell to Southern Utah (22-25, 14-25, 23-25), Northern Arizona (22-25, 28-25, 25-23, 18-25), Central Arkansas (24-26, 23-25, 21-25) and Wyoming (20-25, 29-27, 21-25, 20-25). Junior Jade Guo was named to the all-tournament team after contributing 118 assists, a team-best .293 hitting percentage, a team-high eight blocks and 29 digs over the four matches. Senior Becca Lamb led the team with 32 kills while posting a .256 hitting percentage. Lamb also tallied a pair of double-doubles over the tourney. She registered 10 kills and 11 digs versus Northern Arizona and followed that up with 12 kills and 15 digs in the match with Wyoming. The Racers will travel to Cincinnati for the Bearcat Invitational this weekend.

Southeast Missouri (0-0 OVC; 2-1 overall): Southeast Missouri went 2-1 at the Bradley Kickoff Classic to win the tournament. The Redhawks lost their first match versus USC Upstate (25-19, 17-25, 21-25, 20-25) before defeating Western Illinois (25-18, 25-13, 23-25, 25-22) and Bradley (15-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-17). Senior Claire Keaton was named the tourney's MVP after she recorded 41 kills, five assists, seven blocks and three service aces. She led the team with 15 kills and 20 digs against Bradley. Senior Kelly Benacka was also named to the all-tourney team after posting 72 digs in the three matches. She tied a career-high with 25 digs against Bradley. Freshman Julie Shives played every set in for the Redhakws over the weekend and was named to the all-tournament team. She dished out 114 assists to go along 35 digs and 22.5 points. Southeast Missouri will travel to Missouri State to participate in the JQH Invitational this weekend.

SIU Edwardsville (1-2 overall): SIU Edwardsville went 1-2 in its own Cougar Classic to open up the 2010 season. The Cougars defeated The Citadel (25-18, 25-13, 25-13) and fell to Indiana State (18-25, 25-21, 15-25, 23-25) and Ball State (23-25, 20-25, 18-25). Junior Jessica Hemann tallied 24 kills over the three matches, including 12 in the win over The Citadel. SIUE will travel to Indiana State where it will play in the Drury Inn Classic this weekend.

Tennessee State (0-0 OVC; 0-0 overall): Tennessee State will kick off the 2010 campaign this week as it will host Western Kentucky on Tuesday before playing in the Active Ankle Classic at Ball State this weekend. The Tigers will face Ball State on Friday and Oakland and Robert Morris on Saturday.

Tennessee Tech (0-0  OVC; 0-3 overall):  Tennessee Tech dropped all three of its matches in the Big Orange Bash over the weekend. The Golden Eagles fell to Albany (20-25, 24-26, 27-25, 15-25), Clemson, 13-25, 12-25, 18-25) and Jacksonville (25-12, 23-25, 25-17, 20-25, 9-15). Senior Marie Peddicord recorded 23 kills and a .327 hitting percentage in 12 sets over the weekend. She posted a team-best 15 kills against Jacksonville. Senior Kelsey Gray registered nine total blocks over the tourney. Senior Melanie Culp led the team with 88 assists, including 41 in the match with Albany. Tennessee Tech will host Belmont on Tuesday and travel to the Samford Invitational this weekend. The match with Belmont can be seen on OVCSports.TV

UT Martin (0-0  OVC; 0-3 overall): UT Martin dropped three matches in the War Eagle Invitational to open up the 2010 season. The Skyhawks fell to Georgia Southern (13-25, 15-25, 27-29), Auburn (22-25, 20-25, 13-25) and Troy (12-25, 23-25, 14-25). Junior Britany Wilburn was named to the all-tournament team after leading the team with .541 hitting percentage. Sophomore Kasey Elswick played in all three matches and led the squad with 4.22 digs per set. Junior Jenna Miller recorded 62 assists, including 25 against Georgia Southern. The Skyhawks will travel to the Mercer Bear Brawl this weekend.
