MICHIGAN STATE 8, SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 7 (11 innings)
STARKVILLE, Miss.
-
Bo Felt hit a game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th inning to give Michigan State (5-2) an 8-7 win over Southeast Missouri (4-4) Friday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field. Junior Michael Adamson (0-1) lost his first game of the season, while Kuris Fymier (1-0) earned his first win on the year.

Junior Louie Haseltine got things started for the Redhawks with a double down the left field line in the second inning. Junior Tim Rupp then brought Haseltine home for his fourth RBI of the season off a single up the middle.

Michigan State tied it up in the fourth inning after Jeff Holm hit an RBI triple to right field. Haseltine risked giving up the extra bases with the dive, but it didn't pay off, as the ball rolled to the wall, giving Holm time to reach third and bringing in the tying run. Bo Felt followed with a sacrifice fly, putting the Spartans ahead.

Senior Kyle Gumieny had another good outing for the Redhawks. Through the first three innings, he had only thrown 23 pitches, while holding the Spartans scoreless. In the fourth inning, two runs crossed the plate, both unearned, as Sophomore Kenton Parmley was charged with a throwing error in the inning.

Eli Boike extended the lead for the Spartans in the fifth inning from a three-run homer off Gumieny into right center field.

A wild pitch in the sixth from A.J. Achter brought in junior Ky Burgess for Southeast's second run of the game.

In the eighth inning, Southeast put four runs on the board, the most in an inning since the first game of the season at Auburn. Junior Casey Jones brought in his first RBI of the year off a single through the left side. Haseltine was once again involved in the scoring as well after hitting a bases loaded two RBI single to center field. Junior Brennan Malham finished up the scoring after hitting a pop up to right field in what looked like the third out of the inning. Right fielder Boike dropped the fly ball though, allowing Jones to cross the plate to give the lead back to the Redhawks.

The Spartans quickly evened the score in the bottom of the eighth off a walk and two doubles. After pitching 7 2/3 innings, the most by any starting pitcher for the Redhawks this season, Gumieny was taken out of the game. Junior Michael Adamson took the mound with two runners on and only one out. He pitched out of the jam without allowing any more damage, as he retired the next two batters to get out of the inning.

Junior Blake Slattery got his first at bat of the game in the tenth inning, but that wasn't a factor as he hit a sacrifice fly to center field to give the Redhawks a 7-6 lead going into the bottom of the inning.

The Redhawks weren't able to close out the game though, as the Spartans tacked on a run to send the game into the 11th inning, in which the Redhawks fell.

MISSISSIPPI STATE 10, SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 7 (10 innings)
STARKVILLE, Miss.
- In the second extra-inning game of the day, Southeast Missouri (4-5) fell 10-7 to Mississippi State (5-3). Connor Powers hit a three-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th to lift the Bulldogs over the Redhawks.

Heading into the bottom of the tenth, Trent Wise (0-2) came in to pitch, replacing freshman Shae Simmons. After putting two runners on base, Powers came un the second extra-inning game of the day, Southeast Missouri (4-5) fell 10-7 to Mississippi State (5-3). Connor Powers hit a three-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th to lift the Bulldogs over the Redhawks. p to the plate and sent the pitch soaring over the left field wall to seal the 10-7 victory for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs got off to a fast start today with three runs in the first two innings off junior Logan Mahon. The first run in the first inning came off a wild pitch and was the only earned run of the three scored. Connor Powers hit a two RBI single through the left side the following inning and gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead.

The Redhawks wasted no time in retaking the lead, as they piled on four runs in the third inning. Sophomore Kenton Parmley and junior Casey Jones each had an RBI single, while junior Louie Haseltine reached base off an error from the third baseman, which brought in Parmley. Junior Blake Slattery scored off a passed ball.

The lead shifted again in the fourth inning, as Powers knocked in his third RBI of the game followed by a Cody Freeman two-run homer to left center field.

Southeast tied the game up in the sixth after Jones hit the first triple of the year for the Redhawks into the right field corner for his second RBI of the game. Sophomore Kody Campbell brought in a run as well.

Simmons replaced Mahon in the fifth inning. Simmons held the Bulldogs to two hits over five innings of play, striking out six. The hits were Simmons' first he has given up this season.

In the top of the eighth, Campbell gave the Redhawks the lead with an RBI double to center field for his second RBI of the day, and his team-leading eighth of the season.

Southeast could not hold on though as Mississippi State tied the game in the bottom of the ninth off a throwing error from center fielder Blake Slattery, sending the game into extra innings for the second time today, in which the Redhawks lost.

PRESBYTERIAN 8, EASTERN KENTUCKY 7 (10 innings)
CLINTON, S.C.
 - The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team played its second extra innings game in three days on Friday afternoon as the Colonels fell to Presbyterian College, 8-7. The back-and-forth game featured six lead changes and ended with a walk-off single to center by Matt Hill in the bottom of the 10th.

EKU (2-3) took a 7-5 lead into the bottom of the ninth; however, faulty fielding facilitated a two-run rally by the Blue Hose and sent the game into extra innings. Hill then scored Jesse Harmon with a bloop single into center field to win it.

Sophomore Eric Sanders (0-1) picked up the loss for EKU, working the final 1.1 innings of the game and allowing three runs (only one of them earned) on three hits.

Sophomore Matt Harris started the game for the Colonels and went five innings while allowing five runs on seven hits. Freshman Austin Rexroat pitched three innings of scoreless middle relief following Harris.

Chris Powell (1-1) got the win for PC, going two innings and allowing no runs on two hits.

Sophomore Richie Rodriguez produced a fine day at the plate for EKU, going 4-for-5 and blasting his second career home run. Junior Jayson Langfels batted 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored and sophomore Michael Garcia went 2-for-3 with another home run.

Harmon led PC at the plate, hitting 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI and runs.

After PC drew first blood with a run in the first, the Colonels manufactured a run in the second to tie the score. Senior Anthony Ottrando walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a double to left by Garcia. Senior Joey Stevens then plated Ottrando with a groundout to second base, knotting the score 1-1.

The Blue Hose got an RBI groundout of their own in the bottom of the second to, again, take the lead; however, Rodriguez opened the third with a solo home run to tie the score and the Colonels took their first lead of the game when Langfels and Ottrando dropped consecutive singles in the outfield and junior Richie Allen reached on a fielder's choice that scored Langfels.

The back-and-forth game continued into the bottom of the third as Harmon laced a two-out, two-run single through the right side of the infield that handed the lead to PC.

Garcia kept swinging a hot bat in the fifth, though, as he blasted a two-run job to left center, scoring Ottrando and reissuing the lead to the Colonels.

The Colonels would not hold that advantage long, however, as Nate Horton tied it by taking the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the fifth and powering it over the wall in right center, a solo shot that made it 5-5.

EKU took the inaugural multiple-run lead of the game in the top of the sixth. Sophomore Dustin Dunlop gave the Colonels the lead with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Stevens, and Langfels added to that lead with an RBI double to right center that plated junior Bryce Labhart and made it 7-5.

BUFFALO 6, MOREHEAD STATE 4
MOREHEAD, Ky.
-
Starting pitcher Chaz Mye stymied Morehead State all afternoon and Buffalo pushed five runs across in the sixth inning to claim a 6-4 victory over MSU baseball Friday afternoon at Allen Field.

Brad Agustin led off the game with a home run to center field to give the Bulls (1-3) an early 1-0 lead.

Aided by an error by UB centerfielder Adam Skonieczki, MSU tied the game in the bottom of the first. With Drew Lee on first, Michael Bottoms poked a single into right center field. Lee rounded second and went for third and Skonieczki's throw sailed into the Buffalo bullpen allowing Lee to score.

A pair of solo home runs in the bottom of the second gave the Eagles a 3-1 lead. Michael Fear smoked his first four-bagger of the year to center and Travis Redmon hit a shot to left that stayed just inside the foul pole for his second homer of the season.

Bottoms, the MSU starter, looked to have settled down after giving up the lead-off home run to Agustin. The senior allowed just two hits until the Bulls were able to get to him in the sixth for five runs and retake the lead.

Mye was stellar throughout, as the lefty pitched eight innings allowing just the two home runs to Fear and Redmon, and keeping the MSU offense at bay.

The Eagles did threaten in the ninth against Buffalo closer Kevin Crumb. After Crumb retired Lucas Bainer and Redmon to start the inning, J.D. Ashbrook reached on an error and moved to second on Daniel Pugh's third single of the day. Lee then drove in Ashbrook with a single to right center. Crumb then got Bottoms to ground out to second to end the game.

Pugh had his best day of the season in the loss; going 3-for-5 with three singles.

Bottoms dropped his first decision of the season giving up six runs in 5.1 innings. MSU (4-7) turned to five different relievers to close out the game.

AUSTIN PEAY 9, MILWAUKEE 1
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.
- Freshman Cody Hudson had five RBI and senior left-hander Stephen Huff pitched seven scoreless innings as Austin Peay downed Milwaukee, 9-1, Friday, at the Riverview Inn Invitational, played at Raymond C. Hand Park.

Huff allowed only two hits and struck out three, but issued four walks along the way. More importantly, the Govs starting pitcher and his defense caused the Panthers to strand nine runners while he was on the hill.

Hudson accounted for the Govs first five runs, in part due to timely hitting. He roped a two-run double down the right-field line in the second inning and crushed a three-run home run, his season's first, to left-center in the fourth.

Senior designated hitter Matt Kole lifted a solo home run in the fifth inning to give the Govs a 6-1 lead.

The Govs then took advantage of a pair of Milwaukee errors to plate two seventh-inning runs. Freshman shortstop Reed Harper led off with a double and scored from second on a two-base throwing error by the Panther second baseman. Clinard later scored on another throwing error with Kole being credited with an RBI-fielder's choice.

Austin Peay's bullpen pitched the final two innings, junior Dylan Ray getting one inning of work along with sophomore Chuck Edlin.

Milwaukee's lone run came in the eighth as Paul Hoenecke laced a lead-off double in the left-center gap. A pair of long fly balls moved him around the bases and a Chad Pierce singled him in with two outs.

The Govs matched with a single run in the bottom of the eighth to set the final 9-1 margin.

Aside from Hudson's 2-for-3, five-RBI effort, senior catcher Trey Lucas and Harper each had two hits. Kole also added two RBI.

Four Panthers each had one hit. Starter Kyle Schmidt was tagged for the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits in six innings.

UAB 7, EASTERN ILLINOIS 2
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
- Even while being limited to just two hits on the day, Eastern Illinois baseball still took a lead into the bottom of the sixth inning, but UAB put together four-run rallies in the sixth and seventh to defeat the Panthers, 9-2, Friday afternoon.

Josh Mueller struck out eight and surrendered only one run over 5 1/3 innings. He did not issue a walk. But the two pitchers out of the EIU bullpen -- Mike Martin (0-1) and Brian Hannig -- were charged with eight runs in 2 2/3 innings of relief.

The Panthers (0-7) scored twice in the top of the sixth to take a 2-0 lead. Curt Restko led off with a walk and scored on an error by the UAB third baseman. Cam Strang then plated Alex Gee, who had also walked earlier in the inning, with a two-out single.

Ben Thoma had EIU's only other hit on the day, a leadoff single in the second.

UAB (5-2) took the lead for good on a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning. The longball came after the game-tying run was plated by a two-out single.

The Blazers stretched out their lead with four runs in the seventh, connecting for three extra-base hits - including another two-out, two-run homer.

All five hits Mueller surrendered were singles. He struck out the side in the second inning after giving up consecutive base hits to open the frame. He also escaped the third thanks to an inning-ending double play with runners on first and third.

MIDDLE TENNESSEE 10, JACKSONVILLE STATE 3
JACKSONVILLE, Ala.
- Tyler Burnett, Zach Hudson and Justin Miller each had three hits to lead Middle Tennessee to a 10-3 win over Jacksonville State in the opening game of a three-game series at Rudy Abbott Field on Friday.

Middle Tennessee scored five runs in the fourth inning to take control of the game. Burnett and Will Skinner each hit two-run home runs, while Bryce Brentz added a solo home run as the Blue Raiders built a 9-1 lead.

MTSU pushed the lead to 10-1 in the fifth inning after Miller hit a solo home run, before the Gamecocks added a run in the sixth on a solo home run by Kyle Bluestein to cut the lead to 10-2.

Jax State added a run in the ninth inning when Cunningham scored on a bases loaded walk for the final margin. Cunningham led the Gamecocks at the plate after finishing with a pair of hits.

NORTHWESTERN STATE 11, MURRAY STATE 0
NATCHITOCHES, La.
- The Murray State offense managed only five hits and the Thoroughbreds were shutout for the first time in 118 games as Northwestern State took the first game of a three-game series, 11-0, Friday evening at Brown-Stroud Field.  The last time MSU did not score a run was May 19, 2007 against Jacksonville State in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.

The Demons (7-2) got on the board in the second as Adam Roy and Stephen Gandy both singled up the middle to start the inning.  Tyler Baisley drove in both runners with a triple to center field, and later scored on Eric DeBlanc's groundout to short.

NSU broke the game open in the third as Chase Lyles drew a one-out walk and stole second and third.  Roy drove him in with a single through the right side and stole second.  With two outs, Baisley reached on a throwing error, allowing one run to score.  The Demons added two more unearned runs in the frame on base hits to center from DeBlanc and Aaron Munoz.

Lyles added to the lead in the sixth as Lyles hit a solo home run down the left-field line.

NSU added three runs in the eighth as they got RBI singles from Lyles and Roy, and a run-producing fielder's choice from Colin Bear.

The Breds (4-4) got four of their hits from two players as Jason Laws and Wes Cunningham each collected a pair of base hits.

Chris Craycraft (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing seven runs, four earned, on nine hits over five innings.  Luke Irvine (1-0) picked up the victory by striking out nine over six innings of three-hit baseball.

SIU EDWARDSVILLE 13, DAYTON 12
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.
- James Vazquez's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday capped a three-run inning and vaulted the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball team to a come-from-behind 13-12 win over Dayton Flyers in the opening game of the Austin Peay Riverview Inn Invitational.

Trailing 12-10 at the start off the frame, the Cougars loaded the bases against Flyers reliever Ian Gardek. Michael Hopkins and Travis Becherer each drew walks. In between, pinch-hitting Matt Highland singled. Adam Eggemeyer was hit by a pitch to force home a run, making it 12-11, chasing Gardek from the game.

Dayton shortstop Cole Tyrell took over on the mound and balked to allow Highland to score from third and tie the game 12-12. Vazquez flied to right field line, on a 3-0 pitch, scoring Becherer with the winning run.

The sacrifice fly was the only RBI for Vazquez, who finished the game 3 for 4.

The win capped a wild first game of the tournament, with both teams putting up big innings. SIUE, 2-5, took the lead with a five-run third inning. Dustin Brooks and Mike Hurt each drove in runs in the inning. Hurt's two-run single capped the frame.

Dayton, 4-6, answered with four runs in the top of the fourth off SIUE starter Spencer Patton to cut the Cougar lead to one at 5-4.

Patton, making his second start of the year, went 5.2 innings, allowing four runs on five hits. He struck out five and walked three. He did not get a decision.

SIUE would stretch the lead to 10-4 with a five-run sixth inning, again capped by a big hit from Hurt. With two runs already in and the bases loaded, Hurt drove a double to the right-field gap clearing the bases. The shortstop finished the day 2 for 5 with five RBIs and a pair of runs scored.

The Flyers answered again. Joe Dorocak's grand slam capped a six-run seventh inning that evened the score at 10-10. SIUE used four pitchers over the course of the inning in which Dayton sent 12 hitters to the plate. Sophomore Brian Lorenz struck out clean-up hitter Aaron Dunsmore, with the bases loaded again, to end the inning.

Dayton scored single runs in the eighth and the ninth to take the 12-10 lead.

Lorenz, 1-0, finished the game for the Cougars. He allowed a pair of runs, one earned on three hits. He struck out one and did not walk a hitter.

In all, SIUE banged out a season-high 16 hits in the win. Hopkins was 3 for 5 with a pair of RBIs. Brooks was 2 for 5 with two RBIs. Eggemeyer and Mitch Matecki each had a pair of hits and an RBI for the Cougars.
