PHILADELPHIA - Tennessee State redshirt freshman quarterback Michael German has been added to the Jerry Rice Award Watch List, which was updated and released by the Sports Network on Tuesday.
The award, which is sponsored by Fathead.com, is given to the most outstanding freshman in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) and is in its inaugural season in 2011. The award is named after legendary wide receiver Jerry Rice who played college football at then I-AA (now FCS) Mississippi Valley State before going on to a Hall of Fame career with teh San Francisco 49ers.
A national panel of sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries will select the first Jerry Rice Award winner after the regular season. Rice will be on hand at the national awards banquet on Jan. 6 in Frisco, Texas, to present the award.
German, who has been named OVC Newcomer of the Week each of the past three weeks, has not thrown an interception in 131 pass attempts this season. Overall he has complete 76-of-131 passes (58%) for 1,115 yards and eight touchdowns and also rushed for two scores. German leads the OVC and ranks 21st nationally in passing efficiency (149.66).
